Lake Ontario Canada Fishing: Best Spots, Species & Tips

Ontario / Canada • 2026 fishing guide

Lake Ontario fishing starts with three questions: fish, water and weather

The Canadian side of Lake Ontario can deliver deep-water Chinook, spring brown trout, rainbow trout, trophy-class Quinte walleye, eastern smallmouth bass and productive urban shore fishing. But there is no single “Lake Ontario spot” or fixed trolling depth that works throughout the year.

This guide helps you decide where to go, what to target, which regulation zone controls, where to launch, what to bring and what to check before keeping a fish.

Chinook salmon Rainbow trout Brown trout Lake trout Quinte walleye Bass & pike FMZ 20
Quick answer

Pick your Lake Ontario trip before picking your lure

1 Target

Salmon/trout, walleye, bass, pike, muskie or panfish?

2 Platform

Shore, kayak, your boat or charter?

3 Region

Niagara, GTA, Quinte or Kingston/east end?

4 Legal water

FMZ 20 lake water or a FMZ 16/17 tributary?

5 Conditions

Wind, waves, forage and water temperature decide the final spot.

Boat salmon West / GTA

Open-water trolling and controlled-depth presentations.

Shore salmon Mouths / piers

Becomes more relevant as mature fish stage before migration.

Walleye Bay of Quinte

Spring and late fall are important planning periods.

Smallmouth Kingston / east

Rock, shoals and island structure.

Easy urban shore Toronto

Multiple City-listed public fishing areas.

Know the lake

Lake Ontario is small by Great Lakes area — but still true big water

Water area 18,960 km²

Canada Water Agency figure.

Maximum depth 244 m

About 800 feet.

Average depth ≈86 m

Far deeper than Lake Erie.

Main flow Niagara → St. Lawrence

Lake Ontario is the final Great Lake before the St. Lawrence River.

Why this matters to anglers: nearshore water, deep offshore salmon water, protected Quinte bays and the island-rich east end behave like different fisheries.
Most important legal concept

The regulation can change when you move from Lake Ontario into the river

FMZ 20

Open Lake Ontario

Canadian Lake Ontario, Hamilton Harbour, Lower Niagara River, Bay of Quinte and covered St. Lawrence waters are managed through FMZ 20.

FMZ 16

Western / GTA tributaries

Lake Ontario tributary sections including Bronte Creek, Credit River, Humber River, Don River and several Toronto-area streams have FMZ 16 rules and special salmon/trout opportunities.

FMZ 17

Eastern tributaries

Durham and Northumberland tributaries such as Ganaraska River have FMZ 17 seasons, extended salmon/trout opportunities and location-specific sanctuaries.

Practical example: casting from open Lake Ontario near Port Credit and walking upstream into Credit River can move you into a different regulation framework. Check the exact boundary in Fish ON-Line rather than assuming “connected to Lake Ontario” means “FMZ 20.”
Why boundaries matter

Ganaraska River shows why “salmon are running” is not enough information

OPEN OPPORTUNITY

Lower reach

The lower Ganaraska has special Great Lakes tributary opportunities for Atlantic salmon, brown trout, Pacific salmon and rainbow trout.

SEP 1–OCT 14

Defined sanctuary reach

The reach from the south side of Jocelyn Street Bridge to the southerly limit of the CNR right-of-way is closed to all fishing September 1 through October 14.

OCT 15–DEC 31

Extended fall season returns

The same defined reach reopens for specified salmon/trout opportunities October 15.

This is why the article does not give a generic “fish every tributary in September” recommendation.

Best spots by purpose

Practical Lake Ontario fishing areas on the Canadian side

These are starting regions and public-access areas, not secret coordinates. Final fish location changes with wind, water temperature, forage and season.

SALMON • TROUT • CURRENT

Lower Niagara / west end

The Niagara outflow strongly influences western Lake Ontario and attracts salmon, trout and other sport fish.

Use it for

Chinook, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout and seasonal walleye.

Skill warning

Strong river current and changing hydropower-related flows make the Lower Niagara very different from ordinary lake trolling.

SHORE • SALMON • TROUT

Bronte / Oakville

Historic Great Lakes salmon/trout area with harbour, creek-mouth and open-lake opportunities.

Local restriction

Oakville prohibits fishing in much of Oakville and Bronte harbours from May 15 through October 15 for safety, with listed exceptions including the Bronte West Pier.

Evening window

Designated pier areas allow evening fishing August 1–October 15, from 9 p.m. to midnight.

BOAT • CHARTER • MIGRATORY FISH

Port Credit / Mississauga

A practical GTA base for open-lake salmon fishing, charter departures and seasonal river-mouth fishing.

Best for

Chinook, rainbow trout, brown trout and boat anglers who want easy urban access.

Remember

Move upstream into the Credit River and FMZ 16 tributary rules become relevant.

PUBLIC SHORE • TORONTO

Toronto Islands

The City of Toronto officially lists Toronto Island Park as a year-round fishing location.

Why useful

Lagoons, harbour water and lake-facing shoreline create more variety than a single exposed pier.

Trip constraint

Passenger access generally involves Toronto Island ferry logistics, so check the current ferry schedule before building an early/late fishing plan.

URBAN SHORE • MULTI-SPECIES

Humber Bay Park East

Toronto lists Humber Bay Park East among its public fishing locations. The park also has accessible recreational waterfront nodes designed to support activities such as fishing.

Possible targets

Pike, bass, perch, carp, drum and seasonal migratory salmon/trout.

Zone warning

Move from the lakefront into Humber River and FMZ 16 rules matter.

WALLEYE • BASS • PIKE

Bay of Quinte

Protected eastern Lake Ontario water famous for walleye and also productive for bass, pike and panfish.

Spring

Consider warming bays, mouths, shoals and early structure after the walleye opener.

Late fall

Walleye migration can make deeper travel corridors increasingly important.

SMALLMOUTH • MULTI-SPECIES

Kingston / eastern Lake Ontario

Island-rich, rocky water offers a different experience from the wide-open western salmon basin.

Good targets

Smallmouth bass, pike, lake trout and salmon.

Access advantage

Kingston lists several public launches with parking, detailed later on this page.

TORONTO • SHORE

Tommy Thompson / Ashbridges Bay

Both are included on Toronto’s current public fishing list.

Best use

Urban shore anglers seeking lake-facing access without committing to a boat trip.

Check locally

Park-specific access hours, closures and posted no-fishing areas still control.

EASTERN SHORE • BASS / PIKE

Prince Edward / eastern bays

Protected bays and warmer structure offer a contrast to cold offshore salmon water.

Good fit

Bass, pike, walleye and anglers preferring structure-oriented fishing.

Bait warning

Prince Edward County’s portion of FMZ 20 is inside the Southern Bait Management Zone.

Species planner

Match the species to habitat, season and technique

Species Start looking Useful technique Key mistake
Chinook salmon Offshore temperature/forage zones; mouths later in summer Downrigging, divers and controlled-depth trolling with spoons, plugs, flies or legal bait Treating an old depth report as a permanent waypoint
Rainbow trout Open lake, river mouths and legal migratory tributary reaches Trolling offshore; casting/drifting during migration periods Forgetting the tributary may not be FMZ 20
Brown trout Cooler nearshore water and tributary mouths Shallow/nearshore trolling and casting Assuming they remain shallow as summer water warms
Lake trout Deep cold water and eastern structure Controlled-depth trolling or vertical presentations Forgetting the Oct–Nov FMZ 20 closure
Walleye Bay of Quinte structure and migration routes Jigs, crankbaits, worm harnesses and structure trolling Ignoring the 63 cm oversized-fish restriction
Smallmouth bass Rock, shoals, points, island edges Tubes, drop-shot, jerkbaits, moving baits Fishing the regular harvest season before July 4, 2026
Largemouth bass Protected bays, weeds and warmer cover Soft plastics, jigs and spinnerbaits Confusing its June opener with the later smallmouth opener
Northern pike Bays, weed edges and protected water Spoons, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits Ignoring the spring closure
Muskellunge Eastern lake / St. Lawrence-oriented large-fish habitat Heavy gear, large lures and prepared release equipment Being unprepared for a fast release of a large fish
Yellow perch Bays, harbours and nearshore structure Light jigs and legal bait Assuming every St. Lawrence-area exception matches Lake Ontario
Water-column visual

“How deep are the salmon?” is the wrong first question

Start with forage, temperature, light and recent wind. The productive depth changes when the water moves.

NEARSHORE UPPER COLUMN COLD-WATER BAND DEEP WATER
Brown trout • bass • pike season dependent
Chinook • rainbow follow bait + conditions
Salmon • trout summer cold-water targeting
Lake trout deep cold habitat

Lake whitefish Open all year 12 6
Lake sturgeon Closed all year 0 0
American eel: specially protected in FMZ 20 and may not be caught or possessed under a recreational fishing licence.
Limit math

Salmon and trout share a combined ceiling

Sport Licence 5 combined

Total trout-and-salmon daily catch and possession, while still obeying each species’ tighter limit.

Conservation Licence 2 combined

Species-specific limits still apply inside this aggregate.

Example: a Sport Licence does not allow five Chinook plus two rainbow trout. The combined trout-and-salmon ceiling remains five.
Catch-and-release law

Closed season does not become legal because you plan to release the fish

Illegal size

Release immediately at the place and time of capture.

Over your limit

The fish cannot be retained simply because you intend to sort the catch later.

Closed season

Ontario states that intentionally targeting a species during its closed season is unlawful even if release is intended.

Boat-line exception

Two lines can be legal offshore — but several popular waters are excluded

TWO LINES

Qualifying open water from a boat

FMZ 20 permits two lines while angling from a boat in qualifying open water.

EXCLUSIONS
  • Hamilton Harbour
  • Toronto Harbour
  • Frenchman’s Bay
  • Murray Canal
  • Presqu’ile Bay
  • Weller’s Bay
  • East Lake
  • West Lake
  • Bay of Quinte west of Glenora Ferry
  • specified eastern St. Lawrence water
  • Lake Ontario tributaries
This is not a general two-rod shore-fishing rule.
Spring sanctuary check

Some Quinte-area water is closed to all fishing April 1–May 1, 2026

Consecon Creek

Listed FMZ 20 reaches are fish sanctuaries.

Moira River / Belleville Harbour

Listed reach downstream of Lott Dam is included.

Napanee River

Listed Springside Park-to-Centre Street reach.

Trent River / Trent Canal

Listed Quinte West sections around dams/Lock 1.

A species can be open in FMZ 20 while the exact location remains closed to all fishing.
Bait-management trap

Prince Edward County changes the bait answer

Main Lake Ontario portion

Most FMZ 20 water is treated as Great Lakes water rather than one of Ontario’s four inland Bait Management Zones.

Prince Edward County

The FMZ 20 portion in Prince Edward County is part of the Southern Bait Management Zone.

Movement matters

Live or dead baitfish and leeches have transport restrictions; bait that is both dead and preserved receives specified exceptions.

Canada–U.S. boundary

Lake Ontario has an invisible fishing boundary

Ontario and New York use separate fishing licences and regulations. If you fish New York water, an Ontario licence does not replace the required New York fishing privilege.

CANADIAN WATER
Ontario rules
U.S. WATER
New York rules
INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY

Simply crossing water

CBSA has reporting exceptions for qualifying boaters who cross into or return through foreign waters without landing, anchoring, mooring, contacting another conveyance, or moving people or goods.

Landing / anchoring / exchanging people or goods

Reporting obligations can change. Review CBSA requirements before intentionally building an international boating trip.

Fishing is simpler: know which jurisdiction your lure is fishing and hold the licence required there.

Information gain: current forage science

Why Lake Ontario salmon reports can change so quickly

A salmon location is partly a forage problem. Lake Ontario’s multi-agency prey-fish survey tracks Alewife and other prey used to make stocking and predator-management decisions.

2025 survey trawls 230

Main lake and embayments.

Fish sampled 504,541
Species sampled 33
Alewife share 85%

Of fish captured numerically.

A very large 2024 Alewife year class

The survey estimated approximately 13.8 billion fish in the 2024 Alewife year class, more than three times the estimated number of all other Alewife age groups combined.

Why 2026–2027 matters

Survey models suggested adult Alewife biomass could increase as that strong year class matures.

This is ecosystem context, not a prediction that every salmon trip will improve.

Angler translation: use a recent report to choose a starting area, then use bait, temperature and sonar to decide whether the fish are still there.
Stocked + wild fish

Lake Ontario’s fishery is actively managed, not simply “natural”

Ontario operates nine fish-culture stations and stocks about eight million fish into provincial waters annually. Species produced by Ontario’s stocking program include Atlantic salmon, Chinook salmon, brown trout, lake trout, rainbow trout and other sport/restoration species.

Recreational purpose

Stocking can support fishing opportunities for salmon, trout and other sport fish.

Restoration purpose

Ontario specifically cites restoration of Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario and deep-water cisco rehabilitation.

Find actual stocking records

Fish ON-Line is the better tool for current waterbody/species stocking history instead of relying on an old stocking-plan number.

Ontario licence

Licence setup for Canadian Lake Ontario

1 Residency

Ontario resident, Canadian resident or non-Canadian resident.

2 Sport vs Conservation

Sport = full limits. Conservation = lower harvest limits.

3 Outdoors Card

Needed for most licences; not needed for a one-day Sport Licence.

4 Carry proof

Outdoors Card/licence summary as required.

2026 fishing licence fees

Angler Product 2026 fee
All residency groups Outdoors Card $8.57
Ontario resident 1-year Sport $26.57
Ontario resident 1-year Conservation $15.07
Ontario resident 1-day Sport $12.21
Canadian resident 1-year Sport $55.81
Canadian resident 1-year Conservation $33.43
Canadian resident 1-day Sport $15.21
Non-Canadian 1-year Sport $83.19
Non-Canadian 1-year Conservation $52.71
Non-Canadian 8-day Sport $54.38
Non-Canadian 8-day Conservation $31.52
Non-Canadian 1-day Sport $24.86

Ontario states that fee products are subject to 13% HST. One-day Sport licences do not require an Outdoors Card.

Age / visitor rules

Who may fish without buying the normal licence?

Ontario / Canadian resident under 18

Qualifying government identification can act as a deemed Sport Fishing Licence.

Ontario / Canadian resident age 65+

Qualifying government identification can also serve as a deemed fishing licence with Sport limits.

Non-Canadian visitor under 18

May fish without a personal licence when accompanied by a person holding a valid Ontario recreational fishing licence. Fish kept count against the licensed person’s limit.

Most non-Canadian visitors age 65+ still require the normal Ontario fishing-licence setup.
Phone licence

Save the actual PDF — not a screenshot

Valid digital copy

Ontario permits the licence summary on a mobile device when it remains in the PDF format supplied by the licensing service.

Not valid

Ontario specifically says a photograph or screenshot of the licence summary is not valid.

Cooler compliance

Package your Lake Ontario catch so it can be counted and identified

BETTER Flat, separate fillets
  • easy to count
  • large patch of skin/scales retained
  • clear freezer bag
  • additional identifying feature where necessary
AVOID
ONE FROZEN BLOCK
Difficult to inspect
  • large lump of frozen fillets
  • no identifying skin
  • catch impossible to count easily
  • cooler buried where it cannot be inspected
Transporting live fish away from the water generally requires special Ontario authorization. For ordinary transported sport fish, plan to keep the catch legally identifiable.
Before towing away

Clean and drain your boat before the next lake

1 Remove / open drain plugs

Allow water to drain before transporting the watercraft overland, subject to the specific regulatory exceptions.

2 Remove organisms

Take reasonable steps to remove aquatic plants, animals and algae from boat, equipment, trailer and vehicle.

3 Check again before launching

Ontario requires equipment arriving at the next launch to be free of attached aquatic plants, animals and algae.

This applies to watercraft broadly, including motorboats, rowboats, canoes and other covered craft.
Taking fish home?

Harvest limit and eating limit are two different numbers

Ontario’s Guide to Eating Ontario Fish provides consumption advice using the exact location, fish species and fish length. Advice differs for the general and sensitive populations.

  • search the exact Lake Ontario location
  • identify the exact species
  • measure the fish
  • match the correct size range
  • use the recommended meals-per-month number
227 g 8 oz reference adult fish meal

Great Lakes salmon and trout preparation

Remove skin

Part of Ontario’s advice for reducing exposure to certain fat-associated contaminants.

Trim fatty tissue

Especially around belly and fatty areas.

Cook so fat drains

Grilling, broiling or baking on a rack can allow fat to drip away.

Cooking does not remove contaminants such as mercury that are distributed throughout fish flesh. Always use the location-specific advisory rather than treating cooking technique as a substitute.
Choose the right platform

Shore vs your boat vs charter

Shore

Best for

Migratory river mouths, legal piers, protected harbour water, bass/pike/panfish.

Why choose it

Lowest cost and simplest logistics.

Main limitation

You cannot follow suspended offshore salmon.

Your boat

Best for

Salmon/trout depth control, mobile Quinte walleye fishing and eastern structure.

Why choose it

Search multiple depths and areas quickly.

Main limitation

Great Lakes weather can cancel the trip.

Charter

Best for

Visitors targeting salmon without owning downriggers, divers, electronics and Great Lakes boat equipment.

Ask before paying
  • departure harbour
  • trip duration
  • target species
  • licence responsibility
  • fish-cleaning policy
  • weather cancellation terms
Great Lakes safety

Do not let a good fishing report override the marine forecast

Wind

Check Western or Eastern Lake Ontario marine forecasts immediately before launch.

Waves

Conditions offshore can be dramatically different from a calm marina parking lot.

PFD

Carry a Canadian-approved lifejacket/PFD for each person as required for your craft.

Cold water

Spring and late-season immersion risk can remain severe even when the air feels comfortable.

If conditions exceed your boat or experience level, change to protected water or shore fishing.

Fifteen Lake Ontario mistakes that cost anglers time — or legality

Calling every tributary FMZ 20

GTA/eastern tributaries can switch to FMZ 16 or 17.

Using two rods from shore

The FMZ 20 exception is for qualifying open-water boat fishing.

Ignoring trout/salmon aggregate

Individual limits sit inside a combined total.

Keeping short Atlantic salmon

Sport keeper must exceed 63 cm.

Fishing lake trout in October

Closed Oct 1–Nov 30 in FMZ 20.

Targeting a closed species for photos

Intentional closed-season targeting is unlawful.

Ignoring Ganaraska sanctuary dates

A defined reach closes Sep 1–Oct 14.

Fishing the wrong Bronte harbour area

Municipal May–October restrictions apply.

Following last week’s salmon depth

Wind and forage can move the fish.

Crossing the international boundary while fishing

Ontario and New York privileges are jurisdiction-specific.

Moving bait blindly

Prince Edward County changes the BMZ question.

Saving only a licence screenshot

Ontario requires the supplied PDF for digital licence display.

Freezing fillets into one lump

Catch needs to remain countable and identifiable.

Leaving water in the boat while towing

Practical FAQ

Lake Ontario Canada fishing questions

Is all Canadian Lake Ontario fishing in FMZ 20?

No. Open Canadian Lake Ontario water is primarily FMZ 20, but connected tributaries can use other zones. Bronte Creek, Credit River and Humber River have FMZ 16 rules in relevant reaches, while many eastern tributaries such as the Ganaraska involve FMZ 17.

Where is the best Lake Ontario salmon fishing in Canada?

Western and central Lake Ontario from the Niagara end through Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto support major open-water salmon fishing. Exact productive water changes with temperature, bait and recent wind.

Where can I fish Lake Ontario from shore in Toronto?

Toronto currently lists locations including Toronto Islands, Tommy Thompson Park, Ashbridges Bay Park, Humber Bay Park East, Humber River Marsh, Bluffers Park, Colonel Samuel Smith Park and Marie Curtis Park. Follow posted site restrictions.

Can I fish Bronte Harbour all summer?

Not everywhere. Oakville prohibits fishing in specified Oakville and Bronte harbour areas from May 15 through October 15 because of boating and pedestrian activity. Listed exceptions include Bronte West Pier, and designated evening fishing is available in approved areas August 1 through October 15 from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Where should I target Lake Ontario walleye?

Bay of Quinte is the most obvious Canadian Lake Ontario starting region for a dedicated walleye trip. Spring and late-fall movements are especially important, but sanctuaries and line-use restrictions must be checked for the exact water.

What is the 2026 FMZ 20 walleye season?

The zone-wide walleye and sauger season is January 1 through March 1 and May 2 through December 31, 2026. The Sport limit is four and the Conservation limit is two, with no more than one fish over 63 cm, subject to exceptions.

Can I use two rods on Lake Ontario?

Two lines may be used when fishing from a boat in qualifying FMZ 20 open water, but important exclusions include Hamilton Harbour, Toronto Harbour, Frenchman’s Bay, portions of Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario tributaries. It is not a general two-rod shore rule.

What is the Chinook salmon limit?

Chinook are Pacific salmon. FMZ 20 lists Pacific salmon as open all year with a Sport limit of five and Conservation limit of two. The total trout-and-salmon aggregate is also five for Sport and two for Conservation.

When is Lake Ontario lake trout closed?

FMZ 20 lake trout is open January 1 through September 30 and December 1 through December 31. October and November are closed.

Can I fish both Ontario and New York water with one licence?

No. Ontario and New York use separate fishing licences and regulations. Hold the appropriate privilege for the jurisdiction where you are actually fishing.

Can I use a screenshot of my Ontario fishing licence?

Ontario says the digital licence summary must remain in the PDF format supplied by the licensing service. A photograph or ordinary screenshot is not valid.

Can I take Lake Ontario fish home as fillets?

Fish may be cleaned and transported when Ontario’s identification requirements are followed. Package fish so they can be counted and identified, and leave a large patch of skin and scales on fillets.

Do I need to drain my boat before leaving Lake Ontario?

Ontario’s invasive-species rules require drain plugs or other drainage devices to be opened or removed before qualifying watercraft are transported overland, and reasonable measures must be taken to remove aquatic plants, animals and algae.

Is every legally kept Lake Ontario fish safe to eat frequently?

Not necessarily. Ontario provides separate fish-consumption guidance based on the exact location, species, fish length and population group. Harvest regulations and consumption guidance answer different questions.
