Big Traverse Bay: use 30–32 feet as a search command, not a waypoint
The August 4 tourism report placed productive walleye fishing around 30–32 feet. A newer August 13 local report continued to describe the South Shore as a deep-summer fishery, with drifting spinners/crawlers and trolling crankbaits doing much of the locating work.
Step 1 — scan
Idle or troll through the expected depth range until you see fish or meaningful bait.
Step 2 — decide
Tight fish = stop. Broadly scattered fish = keep covering water.
Step 3 — verify depth
If 30–32 is empty, search shallower/deeper instead of treating the published depth as law.
Step 4 — repeat
Summer basin schools move with forage, wind and changing conditions.

Spot-lock/anchor and vertical jig them.
Pull a spinner/crawler to cover the flat.
Use a crankbait system that can actually reach their level.

Lake sturgeon
August falls inside Minnesota’s July 1–September 30 sturgeon harvest season, subject to the strict harvest rule below.

The AIM Pro Walleye Series Minnesota State Championship is scheduled for Lake of the Woods on August 21–22, with Wheeler Point listed as the launch location and U.S. waters as the event boundary.
Practical implication: if your trip falls on tournament morning, arrive earlier than usual or consider another suitable access point rather than assuming normal parking and ramp traffic.

Walleye + sauger: count the species and measure every borderline fish
A six-fish walleye/sauger possession limit does not mean six walleyes. No more than four may be walleye, all walleyes from 19½ through 28 inches must be released immediately, and only one walleye over 28 inches may be possessed.

Ontario has its own Lake of the Woods exceptions, licence classes, daily/possession limits, bait rules and location-specific restrictions.
One example of why you cannot simply use the Minnesota limit
Ontario’s Lake of the Woods exception lists a daily catch-and-retain limit of 2 walleye/sauger combined for non-Canadian residents, with separate possession and size conditions.
Clearwater Bay, Whitefish Bay and other named Lake of the Woods areas have additional bait, barbless-hook, lake-trout or sanctuary rules.
Trophy fishing only works if released fish leave the boat in good condition
Avoid unnecessarily exhausting a fish that is going back.
Reduce damage to the fish’s protective coating.
Remove the hook with pliers; cut the line if deeply hooked rather than causing major damage.
Keep the fish in or near the water and release as soon as practical.

Remove aquatic plants, mud, zebra mussels and other prohibited material from boat, trailer and fishing equipment.
Drain boat, motor, livewell, baitwell and containers. Keep drain plugs out during transport.
